What are the different types of weighted exercise balls?

Medicine balls

The most popular type of weighted exercise ball, medicine balls are a staple in any fitness regimen. RPM Power medicine balls are made of thick, durable rubber which adds to the overall heavy weight of the ball and makes them ideal for rebounding, throwing and catching. Medicine balls tend to be smaller than wall balls allowing for a much better grip, with the added benefit of a textured surface. They are ideal for doing partnered throws, fast rebounding and rotation exercises. Available as a colourful medicine ball set or as individual weight levels from 2-10kg. Their light-heavy weight levels makes them suitable for users of all fitness levels, from beginners to advanced athletes.

Wall balls

Also bringing lots of versatility to the table are wall balls. Very similar to medicine balls in function, they are great all-rounders that can be used for developing upper- and lower-body strength, coordination and balance. Where they differ is in size, texture and grip: wall balls are much larger with a soft cushioned exterior that allows them to absorb impact better than a medicine ball. Their material shell additionally makes them very comfortable to exercise with and serves for safety when training. With a nice soft bounce, these exercise balls are perfect for developing explosive strength, when performing single high speed, powerful throws. Like a medicine ball, a wall ball is not designed for use in ground slams.

They can be used in combination with wall-ball targets and are available in a range of weight levels (2-10kg) or as a multi-set.

Their durable outer shell made from PVC makes them ideal for intense full-body workouts, helping to improve power and cardiovascular endurance. Unlike medicine balls, slam balls are filled with iron sand and are designed to be lifted and slammed to the ground, with little or no bounce effect. RPM Power slam balls are completely black with a textured tyre thread surface for extra grip and are available in weight levels 3-15kg or as a set.

FAQ on exercise balls

Wall balls feature a soft, material shell and are suitable for use with wall ball targets. Their cushioned filling results in a very low bounce when thrown. Medicine balls are made from thick rubber, which gives them a slightly higher bounce when thrown against the wall or floor. Slam balls are made from inflated rubber tyre thread material filled with iron sand shavings, resulting in absolutely zero bounce.

All three types of balls are suitable for strength and endurance training, with wall and medicine balls being more suited to coordination, speed, balance and rehabilitative exercises. Designed primarily for slamming and throwing movements, slam balls are best suited to upper- and lower-body strength workouts.

Fitness balls are a versatile piece of training equipment that can fit in seamlessly with a wide range of workout types: from intense, HIIT workouts to slow rehabilitation sessions; from beginner to advanced athlete. They are a great way to work on functional movements and stability and can add dynamicity to any workout.
