Choosing the right gym rack

When it comes to fitness, variety is key. That’s why we offer a broad range of weight lifting racks with different variations designed to suit all requirements, allowing you to make the most of your workouts. Whether you’re looking for a versatile multi-functional power rack, a cable weight machine or one of our foundational adjustable squat racks, the type of equipment you choose will ultimately depend on your workout space, strengthening goals, safety requirements and budget.

Weightlifting racks for your workout space

Whether you’re looking to set up a new home gym, commercial training centre or simply looking to upgrade your current equipment, the products you need will all depend on your space. How large is your gym area? What kind of flooring do you have? How high are your ceilings? Whether you are building a home or commercial gym, we can help by providing a free consultation give us a call or visit our commercial section for more information.

Home gyms

Our Olympic lifting racks and cable resistance machines like the “Loki” and “Kratos” multi-gyms and HomeFlex range excel in home settings due to their solid, compact structure that still offers plenty of functional training features. These are ideal if you’re a regular lifter or you’re sharing the space with family members with different training requirements. For smaller spaces, we recommend our foldable wall-mounted squat racks and space-saving half racks. Benefit from foundational compound movements within a tighter workout space.

Semi-commercial spaces

Semi-commercial racks and rigs are suitable for both home gyms and commercial spaces used only by a limited amount of people. We recommend getting a semi-commercial rack for home workouts if you’re a serious lifter looking for a heavy-duty piece of kit that you will use frequently. We also recommend semi-commercial racks for clubs or fitness spaces frequented by a set number of people. Benefit from the high-quality and stability of a commercial-grade piece without having to pay commercial prices.

No matter what you’re looking for, we’re happy to provide you with custom quote for your commercial gym.

Weightlifting racks for your strengthening goals

When it comes to strength and conditioning, racks offer a multitude of training options for a comprehensive workout experience. Cover your basics with a simple squat rack, bench and barbell/weight plate combo or take advantage of the many attachments and accessories for tailored exercises on a power rack. In addition to training features, the majority of our racks also come with practical safety and storage features like spotter arms and plate pegs.

What exercises do you want to perform?

  • Squats, deadlifts and bench press: Squat stands and power racks are primarily designed for compound exercises using either a weight plate/barbell combo or a weight stack. Spotter arms and J-hooks can be used to hold and catch your barbell, while a Smith bar (“Kratos”, “Tyre” and “Loki”) serves for additional safety when lifting.
  • Cable crossovers, twists and other cable exercises: Cable machines like those in our Norse Range utilise a single or dual stack cable pulley system for a whole range of full-body strengthening exercises. Attach different handles to the cable karabiner for functional training and optimum comfort.
  • Lateral pull-downs and rows: Great for targeted muscle engagement and building upper-body strength.
  • Pull-ups/chin-ups: Many of our multi-gyms (Norse racks, “Renegade” Power Rack, Foldable Wall-Mounted Squat Rack, etc.) are fitted with an integrated pull-up bar for bodyweight exercises and resistance band training.
  • Dips: Some of our power rack gyms and squat stands (Loki, Half Rack R4000, Adjustable Squat Stand) feature an integrated dip station for chest, tricep and shoulder exercises.
  • Resistance band exercises: Racks like “Ragnar” and our yellow Quarter Rack feature pegs for attaching resistance bands. Add resistance to your barbell exercises or attach the bands for extended training possibilities.

Weightlifting racks for your safety requirements

Many RPM Power racks are fitted with integrated safety features for additional peace of mind when you lift. If the power rack or squat stand you’re looking at doesn’t come with spotter arms or J-hooks, you can always purchase them separately. Our racks feature multiple racking options, not only to add these safety features but also to ensure that everything you need for a secure lift is adjusted to your correct height. Pull-plug adjustments and safety pins come as standard on any rack with adjustable elements, while many of our sturdier power racks with cable systems feature a simple “lift and pull” attachment method for adding and removing training elements.

FAQ on squat racks and power racks

Squat racks and power racks are both primarily designed for performing compound strength exercises in conjunction with a barbell and weight plates. Although they share many similarities, there are some important differences between the two, mainly: squat stands generally have an open frame, while power racks (also known as power cages) have a larger frame that the user steps into. Due to this larger frame, power racks usually offer more integrated exercise and safety features than a squat rack. Offering the user lots of variety, power cages are also ideal for heavy lifters, while squat racks are generally more space saving due to their smaller structure. Choosing one over the other should depend on space constraints, weightlifting targets, and the level of safety you require during your workouts.

No matter the type of rack you have, weightlifting racks are a step up from your simple barbell and bench workout. In their most basic form, a rack acts as a safety structure that allows you to rack your barbell safely when lifting. Larger, more versatile racks go a step further and offer not only safety features like spotter arms, J-hooks and a Smith machine, but also additional features and add-ons for dynamic compound and isolation exercises.

A Smith machine generally consists of a barbell attached to a vertical track or rails and a weight pulley system. It provides guided and controlled barbell movement in a fixed vertical path, which ensures stability and safety during lifts. Users can lock the barbell into various positions on the vertical track to perform exercises like squats, bench press, shoulder press and more with reduced risk of losing control of the weight. A Smith bar is ideal for both beginners and experienced lifters who want to perform exercises with strict form or as part of a structured training programme.

It is important to consider your strengthening goals, safety requirements, budget and workout space when choosing a multi gym or squat rack. Some important questions that you should consider before your purchase include:

  • Which exercises do you need to perform to reach your training goals?
  • Which features should your rack have in order for you to perform these exercises and meet your goals?
  • How much space do you have available?
  • Are you working out in a home or commercial setting?
  • Who will be using the equipment? How many people? What are their experience levels?
  • Which safety features are required?
  • What is your budget?

With any power or squat rack you can perform foundational compound exercises, such as squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, etc. Building upon a basic rack, many offer additional training options that are particularly great for isolation exercises. Power and squat racks with a dip station, lateral pulldown, pull-up bar, row attachment, landmine attachment and more are available from our store.

We offer a wide range of extra attachments and accessories suitable for use with our multi-gyms. These include safety features like spotter arms and J-hooks, as well as add-ons like landmine attachments, weight plate storage pegs, wall ball targets and ankle straps. You can also find a range of gym flooring and wall-mounted storage solutions that work well with our weightlifting power racks.

Both commercial and semi-commercial racks are suitable for home use. We recommend using a commercial rack in your home gym if you are a serious lifter who will be using the equipment often. Commercial and semi-commercial-grade set ups are extremely solid options — often featuring multiple add-ons and training functionalities — and are available for purchase at different price points that meet various budgets.

With the exception of our Wall-Mounted Bay Rigs, none of the RPM Power racks need to be bolted to the ground. Some racks offer bolt holes should you wish to secure them to your floor, however, this is completely optional.

RPM Power racks are straightforward to assemble. Every rack comes with a physical instruction manual and many of our products have detailed step-by-step video guides for easier set up. Should you run into any difficulty at all when setting up your equipment, please get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to talk you through it. We also offer installations for rack purchases for an additional fee depending on your Eircode.

It’s important to regularly maintain your weightlifting rack to ensure optimal function and performance. Maintenance guidelines are outlined in equipment manuals, but in general you should inspect the rack before use, ensuring all parts and screws are tightened and functioning. Inspect any cables on a cable weight machine regularly and replace them if they ever appear frayed or damaged. Clean your rack and wipe away any dirt or dust with a damp cloth. Consistent upkeep will ensure that the equipment remains in good working condition and reduces the risk of accidents or injuries during workouts.
